'Mexico has every right' - Sheinbaum defends fuel aid to Cuba despite US tariff threats

"Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the country has the right to continue sending fuel to Cuba for humanitarian or commercial reasons, while always ensuring that national interests are not affected. At her Monday morning press conference in Mexico City, the Mexican leader indicated that in the past there were tariffs imposed by the United States as a result of the support provided to Cuba, but said humanitarian aid will continue. "Mexico has every right to send fuel, whether for humanitarian or commercial reasons, but we do not want to affect Mexico. At some point there were related fees; well, tariffs if it was sent [aid], but later they decreased," she said. She also noted that there are requests from private companies interested in purchasing fuel from Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), with the aim of later commercialising it on the Caribbean island. "There are private companies dedicated to fuel transport and the export part of crude oil or some other fuel is sold to a private company that then takes it to another country," she explained. In that regard, Sheinbaum highlighted recent announcements of economic opening by Cuba toward foreign investors. "They announced an opening of their economy and all that is being reviewed to see what different actions we take," she added. During her conference, the president reiterated that the Cuban people have self-determination to decide on their internal affairs, and spoke out against any interventionism. "There must not be intervention of one country over another country. And the relationship with Cuba, Mexico-Cuba, is historic," she stated. Regarding the bank account opened by a civil organization to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba, Sheinbaum reported that she donated 20,000 pesos, around 1,100 dollars, in response to the call made weeks ago by former president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. In recent months, Mexico has sent approximately 3,125 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba through four maritime shipments. The latest vessel arrived on the island on March 27 with supplies such as rice and beans, which will be distributed to the Cuban people. "
