‘We will take further protest measures’ - Sheinbaum vows stronger response to US over Mexican’s death in ICE custody

"Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said her government will take further protest measures over the deaths of Mexican nationals in the United States while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Sheinbaum said the Foreign Affairs Secretariat (SRE) will announce the actions to be taken following the recent death of a Mexican in a detention center in the state of California. "More complaints will be made not only for what we have been doing, but now we are going to take further protest measures in response to what happened," she said. Although she did not detail what those actions would entail, she said they will go beyond a diplomatic note. "There are several actions we are going to take in protest over yet another death of a Mexican, of a national in the United States," she added. The most recent case occurred on March 25, when a Mexican national died while in the custody of immigration authorities at the Adelanto processing center in California. The SRE did not determine the cause of death, but said the individual was transferred to a hospital in Victorville, California, where he died. According to Roberto Velasco, that case brings the total to 14 deaths of Mexicans in the United States under similar circumstances during the second term of President Donald Trump. Of that total, five occurred in California, three in Georgia, two in Arizona, one in Texas, one in Florida, one in Missouri and another in Illinois. "
