ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the by-election on the National Assembly’s seat NA-256 Khuzdar, that was scheduled on the coming Sunday, on the request of the Balochistan government citing security concerns in the said constituency. “Consequent upon the request of the provincial government of Balochistan for postponement of by-election in NA-256 Khuzdar, due to prevailing law and order situation in the area of the constituency, the Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to suspend the election schedule in NA-256 Khuzdar, scheduled to be held on 5 April, 2026,” read the related notification issued by the ECP. It said that the chief secretary and inspector general of police, Balochistan have been directed to visit the ECP in person to brief on the situation. In September 2024, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, the head of Balochistan National Party Mengal (BNP-M), announced having stepped down from NA-256 seat citing security situation in Balochistan. Speaker NA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq accepted his resignation this February, following which, the ECP issued the schedule for by-election on the said seat that now stands postponed.
