Gangwon Province launches Korea’s largest national university in historic merger

Kangwon National University held a vision proclamation ceremony Monday at its Chuncheon campus, marking its launch as the country’s first unified national university serving all of Gangwon Province. The university was established on March 1 through the merger of Kangwon National University and Gangneung-Wonju National University. The combined institution now enrolls about 30,000 students and employs roughly 1,400 faculty members, making it the largest national or public university in the country. More than 1,000 people attended the ceremony, including Gangwon Province Governor Kim Jin-tae, Vice Education Minister Choi Eun-ok and leaders from national higher education bodies. Kangwon National University President Jeong Jae-yeon joined the presidents of its four campuses — Chuncheon, Gangneung, Samcheok and Wonju — for the vision proclamation. The university and the education ministry also signed an implementation agreement covering the integration through Feb. 28, 2030.
