"The Iranian National Commission for UNESCO's Secretary General Hassan Fartousi warned during a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday that the war in Iran is leading to mounting cultural losses. "Targeting cultural heritage is targeting human identity. If we care about humanity, it is necessary to respect cultural heritage," Fartousi stressed. He noted that 132 Iranian heritage sites have been damaged since the start of the war. "Efforts have been made to preserve and protect these sites as much as possible. Wherever they have been attacked, heritage guardians and those responsible for cultural heritage have tried to reach them," Fartousi added. "What is important to us is prevention; it is important to us that the scope of destruction does not expand," he continued. Fartousi also noted that UNESCO is responding quickly, issuing a strong condemnation 24 hours after the Minab school incident and the strike on Golestan Palace. Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at 'curbing Iran's nuclear and missile programmes'. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israeli and US assets in the region, accompanied by reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict spilt over into Lebanon as Hezbollah intervened 'in revenge' for the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader."
