Historic reappearance - Congo set for World Cup after 50 years with 1-0 win over Jamaica in Guadalajara

"Jubilant fans celebrated outside Akron Stadium in Guadalajara on Tuesday as the Democratic Republic of the Congo secured a historic 1–0 victory over Jamaica, booking their place at the 2026 World Cup for the first time in over 50 years. Footage shows Congolese fans celebrating, dressed in national colours, waving flags and chanting. The African supporters were joined by Mexican fans who embraced the multicultural atmosphere as they left the sporting event. "It feels nice, it is like reaffirming who you are, everything moves. Hearing the diversity of languages that defines us, it is incredible," said Mimi Chita, a supporter of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mobilisation of Congolese supporters to Mexico was one of the standout aspects of the event, with many travelling long distances to back their team. "Taking flights; most of them driving from Paris, Europe, you know, and from everywhere to show our team how much we support them, and I think that is very good," said Joseph Mavinga, a fellow DR Congo supporter. Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in extra time, sealing the victory and confirming the Democratic Republic of the Congo as one of the 48 teams qualified for the 2026 World Cup. The African side will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K. The result marks a historic return for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who have not appeared at a World Cup since 1974, when they competed as Zaire - ending a wait of more than 50 years."
