Cliffhanger! - Russian teams abseil down canyon to repair power lines in Dagestan’s mountains

"Daredevils from Russia's EMERCOM (Emergency Situations Ministry) were seen abseiling down Dagestan’s mountains to repair power lines on Tuesday. Footage includes them climbing on the side of the sheer gorge and throwing a rope across a raging river. The team restored electricity to homes in the Kulinsky and Laksky district. "The power lines ran across a canyon up to 140 metres deep. Due to the risk of rockfalls, a rope access rescue team was called in to assist with the work" EMERCOM revealed. "The rescue team set off for the mountains straight after spending a day on duty helping people in flood-hit Makhachkala." Earlier, Mahachkala had declared a state of emergency following record rainfall. The flooding left dozens of homes submerged, led to mass evacuations and caused several railway bridges to collapse. More than 327,000 Dagestan residents were left without electricity. The Russian Emergencies Ministry reported on Tuesday that 811 houses, over 1,000 plots of land and 55 roads were flooded across six settlements in Dagestan. 197 people, including 53 children, remained in temporary accommodation centres, while 82 teams from the regional power networks continued their efforts to restore electricity and gas supplies across the republic."
