Hotter Maundy Thursday until Easter Sunday likely over PH

MANILA, Philippines – The entire archipelago can expect hotter, more humid weather from Maundy Thursday until Easter Sunday, the state weather agency said on Wednesday, advising the public to avoid outdoor activities, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon, to avoid fatigue, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion. Weather specialist Chenel Dominguez of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5 a.m. briefing that the weather systems expected to affect the country during Holy Week, or ‘Semana Santa’, would be the easterlies and the ridge of the High Pressure Area (HPA). At present, she said, the ridge of HPA, which is the opposite of the low-pressure area, has been extending over Northern Luzon. Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country could experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. “Generally, the country would likely have clear and sunny skies throughout the day with less chance of downpour, which may occur during late afternoon or at night,” according to the Pagasa forecaster. From Maundy Thursday until Easter Sunday, light to moderate easterly to southeasterly winds will prevail over Northern and Central Luzon with slight to moderate seas, according to Pagasa. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas, it added. Pagasa also advised the public to drink water regularly, take breaks in shaded areas, and wear light-colored clothing. Also, use sun protection, such as a hat or umbrella, and avoid alcohol and caffeine as much as possible. For the heat index outlook, Pagasa said Metro Manila's temperature could hit 35 degrees Celsius, which falls under the extreme caution category. The day's highest temperature could be over Virac, Catanduanes, at 45 degrees Celsius, falling under the danger level.
