Transport fares frozen and subsidies - Chilean president Kast unveils new measures after fuel price surge

"Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast announced new measures to support families, fishermen and transport workers amid the rise in fuel prices caused by the war in Iran, during a conference on Wednesday in Santiago. The president acknowledged that "the effect of the war [in the Middle East] has hit all families in Chile," so he announced that his government will freeze public transportation prices. "The initial plan considered freezing public transportation fares, both at the Metropolitan Region level and also working with governors throughout Chile, so that this fare is also respected at the regional level," he explained. Regarding contributions to taxis, collective taxis, and school transportation, Kast said that an amount of 100,000 pesos, equivalent to about 109 dollars, will be delivered over a period of six months. "Also considered, as you know, was an extraordinary contribution to taxis, collective taxis, and school transportation with a specific bonus for a couple of months while the effect of the war lasts," he stated. In addition, the Chilean president informed that a total contribution of 225 million dollars will be allocated to municipalities to subsidise gas, which will benefit the most vulnerable families. For artisanal fishermen, he noted that there will be a contribution of 100,000 pesos, equivalent to about 109 dollars, for up to six months for vessels up to 12 meters in length. "Artisanal fishing is also affected by the rise in oil and gasoline prices, depending on the type of motor they use. And for them, we have seen a special measure that covers more than 9,000 vessels registered in the Artisanal Fishing Registry," he detailed. With these measures, the Chilean government seeks to ease the impact that the war in Iran has caused on the most vulnerable sectors, ensuring that families, transport workers, and fishermen receive support following the rise in fuel prices.
