Making peace — Yogyakarta villagers await return of fallen Indonesian UNIFIL soldier killed in Lebanon strike

"Family members and local officials in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, are waiting for the return of the body of Indonesian peacekeeper Farizal Rhomadhon, who was killed in southern Lebanon while serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Rhomadhon's uncle, Sumijan, said the family had been told the body may arrive later this week, noting that 'the latest news from the commander said the body will arrive on Friday,' though he added there is still no full certainty due to the situation on the ground. Local authorities described how the news first reached the community. Wakidi, deputy village head, said 'on Monday at 6 am, I received a call informing me that Farizal had been killed in Lebanon,' adding that residents were then informed so they could prepare for the arrival. The Indonesian soldier was killed on March 29 after a projectile struck a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon. Three other Indonesian peacekeepers were injured in the same incident. A day later, two more Indonesian soldiers were killed while escorting a UN convoy, highlighting the growing risks faced by peacekeepers in the region. The attack has drawn international reaction. China’s Foreign Ministry condemned the killing as 'absolutely unacceptable,' stressing that attacks on UN peacekeepers violate international humanitarian law and calling for de-escalation. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the incident, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that attacks on peacekeepers may amount to war crimes. UNIFIL said the origin of the projectile remains unknown and confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. The developments come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with cross-border strikes continuing as part of the wider regional conflict."
