Fertility decline drives smaller Jamaican households, survey finds

Jamaica’s average household size continues to decline, driven largely by a reduction in fertility rates, the latest survey of living conditions has revealed. The 2023 survey, conducted by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), found that the average household size in Jamaica is 2.6 persons, down from three people in 2017. The report attributes this decline primarily to a drop in the average number of children per household, which fell from 0.5 in 2017 to 0.8 in 2023.
