MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday said there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a strong offshore earthquake in Indonesia. “There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said. A magnitude 7.4 quake struck eastern Indonesia early Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey, prompting an initial warning from a US monitoring center of possible hazardous tsunami waves within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter.
