There is not much more than two months until South Korea kicks off its 2026 World Cup against Denmark and there are many questions surrounding the team after its trip to Europe. On Saturday, the Taeguk Warriors lost 4-0 to the Ivory Coast, a truly terrible result at this stage of preparation which was followed by a trip to Austria on Tuesday local time. The performance in Vienna was better, but that is not saying much, and it ended 0-0. It should be said, and it has been said, that these were only friendlies. Too much can be read into warm-up games but there are worrying reminders of 2014, when coach Hong Myung-bo was in charge going into the World Cup. In the five games before the big kick-off in Brazil, Korea failed to score in four and suffered two 4-0 defeats. At the time, the optimistic among us hoped that it would all come good. It didn’t and the team left South America with a single point from three games and three poor performances.
