Govt managing supply, demand of essential items: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that Pakistan is effectively managing the supply and demand of essential commodities despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Speaking at a review meeting on measures to shield the country from financial and economic fallout amid regional tensions, Sharif directed authorities to develop a medium and long-term comprehensive strategy to address the economic and financial impacts on the country amid rising global prices. He said the government was developing strategies to shield the country from potential financial and economic repercussions arising from the regional crisis. “Many countries are struggling to maintain the balance of supply and demand for essential goods due to the current situation,” he noted, according to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office. He directed authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy aimed at minimising economic impacts on masses, while ensuring production and the balance of supply and demand across sectors were not disrupted. The prime minister praised relevant institutions for taking timely and effective measures to prevent any emergency in the supply of essential commodities. He further highlighted that, after meeting domestic requirements, Pakistan was progressing with plans to export surplus production. Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to economic stability, growth, and public welfare. He called for close coordination among ministries and institutions to ensure stability across all sectors, and stressed the need for measures to reduce the impact of rising production costs on exports and overall economic output. “Available resources and opportunities must be fully utilised to safeguard agricultural and industrial production amid current economic challenges,” he added. The meeting also examined medium and long-term planning to address financial and economic challenges arising from regional tensions. In a briefing, the officials said that ministries and institutions were monitoring the economic impact of the crisis on a daily basis. The prime minister praised the coordinated efforts of all ministries and institutions and called for further improvements in collaboration.
