A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an elderly woman in her 80s was stabbed to death outside her home in Plumstead, southeast London. Police responded to reports of a man armed with a knife at Red Lion Place at 8.50am on Wednesday. The victim, identified locally as Doris, was discovered with severe injuries and transported to hospital, where she later died. A second man was reportedly threatened with the weapon - but escaped unharmed. The suspect, a man in his sixties who is thought to have been known to the deceased, turned himself in at a nearby police station shortly after 9.10am. He was subsequently detained on suspicion of murder. Officers took him to hospital where he is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Forensic investigators have been gathering evidence from a Mini Countryman parked within a cordoned area outside the property. Local residents described Doris as a beloved member of the community who enjoyed socialising with patrons at the neighbouring pub. "Doris would stand outside and chat to the pubgoers for hours. She was an extremely lovely lady," one neighbour said. The same resident added: "This is horrific. She was the kindest, warmest, sweet woman you could meet. It's horrendous news." Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is heading the Metropolitan Police probe her death, described the case as "a deeply tragic incident".
