MANDAUE CITY, Cebu – A group of local advocates is calling for an overhaul of Cebu’s energy supply chain by increasing the share of renewable energy to cushion the impact of the Middle East crisis on power supply. The Cebu Electricity Rights Advocates (CERA) said local distribution utilities and the national grid operator should prioritize Philippine-grown renewable energy to shield consumers from the skyrocketing fuel prices. Speaking for CERA, its convenor Nathaniel Chua said heavy reliance on imported fossil fuel would make Cebu “dangerously exposed” to the conflict in Iran that had already destabilized global benchmarks.
