'Last best chance' — Rubio defends strikes on Iran to remove 'shield' protecting ‘radical clerics’ with nuclear ambitions

"US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the decision to launch strikes on Iran, saying the move was necessary to prevent what Washington describes as an escalating nuclear and military threat in the hands of 'radical clerics'. Rubio said there was 'zero doubt' that Iran seeks nuclear weapons, arguing that Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure is being developed in a way that did not suggest peaceful nuclear energy was its goal. “They build their reactors and their facilities deep in the mountains, away from the public glare,” Rubio said, adding that Iran has been offered 'every opportunity' to pursue what he described as a civilian nuclear programme based on imported fuel and above-ground reactors. “We were on the verge of an Iran that had so many missiles and so many drones that no one could do anything about their nuclear weapons program in the future,” Rubio said, calling the situation an 'intolerable risk.' He added that the US administration believed this was a decisive moment. “This was our last, best chance to eliminate that conventional threat,” Rubio said, stressing that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with the conflict now into its fifth week."
