"Capybaras at the Moscow Zoo were seen venturing outdoors to bask in the spring sunshine - with patches of snow still covering the enclosure. Footage taken on Thursday shows the rodents slowly descending a staircase, sniffing the snowdrifts and heading out for a walk. "Letting warmth-loving animals outdoors is always an important stage that marks the true arrival of spring. We try to make this transition as comfortable as possible, taking into account the individual characteristics of each species. It is especially touching to watch the younger residents," said zoo director Svetlana Akulova via Telegram. Akulova revealed that the first to venture outside was a young capybara named Simka, born in autumn 2025. "The animals confidently walked along both the cleared paths and the snowy ground, showing keen interest in their neighbours in the enclosure - a llama, a vicuna and a guanaco," she added. The capybara is the largest living rodent species. In the wild, they inhabit temperate and tropical regions of South America. "
