ISLAMABAD: Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lieutenant General Nazir Ahmed Butt (retd), Thursday, presented the NAB Annual Report 2025 to Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani, which suggested that the accountability watchdog made recoveries exceeding six trillion rupees in the last year, marking the highest annual recovery since the Bureau’s inception in 1999. The chairman NAB had called on the chairman Senate at the Parliament House, said an official statement issued by the Senate Secretariat after the meeting. Gilani, who himself faced multiple cases involving serious corruption in the past, told the NAB chief that he “consistently championed the ideals of transparency and accountability.” “Throughout my journey, from serving as the Prime Minister to the Speaker of the National Assembly, and now as the Chairman Senate, I have consistently championed the ideals of transparency and accountability,” Gilani said, according to an official statement issued by the Senate Secretariat. In July last year, an anti-corruption court in Karachi acquitted Gilani in all 26 cases related to a multibillion-rupee trade subsidy scandal. In the meeting with NAB chief on Thursday, the Senate chief assured that the Senate of Pakistan stood “firmly with NAB in its critical mission to achieve a truly corruption-free Pakistan,” the statement said. Gilani said the NAB’s Annual Report 2025 is an “exceptionally significant document that provides valuable insights into the Bureau’s performance and strategic direction,” added the statement. “Upon reviewing the key highlights of the NAB Annual Report 2025, the chairman Senate expressed particular appreciation for the historic recovery of over Rs 6 trillion, marking the highest annual recovery since the Bureau’s inception in 1999. He noted that this remarkable achievement demonstrates NAB’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding public funds and national assets,” said the statement. He further commended what he described as the report’s focus on integrating financial recoveries with institutional reforms, digital innovation, and citizen-centric approaches, the statement said. The chairman Senate said the efforts to eliminate corruption and strengthen transparency are aligned with the global agenda, particularly the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He also highlighted that the Senate of Pakistan publishes its own annual report to ensure that the public remains informed about performance and progress. Gilani also emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between institutions to strengthen governance frameworks and ensure justice for all citizens. He expressed optimism about continued cooperation between the Senate and the NAB in pursuit of these shared national objectives, the statement said. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
