Strict implementation of austerity drive across country urged

KARACHI: The founder and chairman of Saylani Welfare International Trust, Maulana Muhammad Bashir Farooq Qadri, has expressed serious concern over the lack of implementation of the government’s austerity campaign in provinces other than Punjab. He urged both federal and provincial governments to enforce the austerity measures uniformly across the country, ensure strict compliance, and adopt effective steps to prevent the wastage of energy and resources, thereby safeguarding national assets. In a statement issued on Thursday, he said the positive effects of the austerity drive were visible in Punjab, where marriage halls are being closed at 10:00 p.m. and the one-dish policy is being largely implemented. However, he noted that no similar seriousness is evident in other provinces. He questioned whether other provinces are exempt from this national campaign, as marriage halls there are neither closing at the designated time nor limiting the number of guests, resulting in the wastage of both energy and food. He revealed that upon contacting senior officials of the Sindh Police, it emerged that they have not yet received clear governmental instructions regarding the implementation of the austerity campaign, which he described as a matter of concern. He stated that unnecessary extravagance and excessive spending at wedding ceremonies not only create a social burden but also lead to the wastage of food grains and other resources. If these measures are implemented seriously, the austerity campaign would succeed and the country’s food and economic pressures could be significantly reduced. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
