Five killed in Karachi rain-related incidents

KARACHI: At least five people were killed and three others injured in separate rain-related incidents as torrential downpours and strong winds battered the city on Thursday, worsening an already critical urban flooding situation. Authorities had earlier declared a rain emergency after intense rainfall disrupted daily life across the metropolis, inundating roads, crippling traffic and triggering widespread power outages. Fatal incidents were reported from multiple areas. In Golimaar, a house wall collapsed onto a rickshaw, killing a 40-year-old driver identified as Irshad on the spot. In Orangi Town, three children — Qasim, Ameer Muawiya and Rehman — were injured when a wall fell near a local hotel. Electrocution incidents claimed three lives in different neighbourhoods. A 23-year-old man, Sartaj, died in New Karachi while working at home. A 30-year-old, Abdul Wali, was electrocuted near PIB Colony, while a 12-year-old girl, Dua Batool, lost her life in Surjani Town under similar circumstances. The injured and deceased were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Civil Hospital for treatment and legal formalities. Meanwhile, key arteries including Shahrah-e-Faisal were submerged, with sections near Nursery resembling a pond. Vehicles were stranded in accumulated rainwater, forcing commuters to push their cars through flooded stretches. Road infrastructure also suffered damage, with sinkholes reported near Karimabad and on the road connecting Usman Memorial Hospital to Meena Bazaar. A motorcyclist was injured after falling into a pit, while a car became trapped after a section of the street caved in.
