'Magical feeling' - Hundreds mark Maundy Thursday with Jesus Nazareno de la Humildad procession in Antigua Guatemala

"Hundreds of members of the Brotherhood of San Cristóbal El Bajo Antigua participated in the procession of Jesus Nazareno de la Humildad on Thursday as the country celebrates one of the most emblematic religious expressions of Holy Week. Footage shows devotees beginning the procession at the temple of San Cristobal El Bajo, dressed in purple robes, and making their way through the streets carrying a figure of Jesus Nazareno de la Humildad. "It is a magical feeling to be in Antigua and see the processions, to witness everything they represent, not only for Guatemalans, but also for the devoted bearers and for people of faith, who know they are here for something greater than themselves," a visitor said. "As residents of Antigua, we truly experience it with great passion, fervour and devotion. In fact, it is one of the places where these days are lived with the greatest intensity. Especially today, on Maundy Thursday, we experience it with great love and faith," another added. The image of Jesus Nazareno de la Humildad, whose veneration dates back to 1578, is one of the oldest in the country and is characterised by its indigenous features, narrow eyes, and softened cheekbones, giving it a serene expression. Over the centuries, this representation of Christ has established a particular devotion among the faithful, who highlight its human and approachable character."
