More than medicine - Lebanese family of doctors turns home into refuge for displaced people amid rising tensions with Israel

"A family of three doctors turned their property in Lebanon's Chouf region, southeast of Beirut, into a shelter for families displaced by fighting in the south, as the conflict with Israel continues to escalate.   Footage filmed on Thursday shows displaced women preparing food while others sit outside tents. Children can also be seen playing football in the camp.   As the conflict escalated in early March, many people were left without shelter, prompting the family to open the property to displaced civilians. Ali Abboud, who oversees the initiative, said the effort was launched on humanitarian grounds.   With the support of volunteers and donors, the family set up tents and essential facilities to accommodate displaced people. "Since my sons are doctors and their work is humanitarian, we launched this charity initiative in collaboration with other benevolent individuals who provided the necessary support. I would also like to thank the mayor, who came to inspect the process," Ali Abboud said. "We have been helping displaced people since the first day of the war. We brought in a construction team to set up the tents. Initially, we hosted around 100 families, some of whom have since left for other places. They slept in the open and came from various religious sects and social backgrounds. They were all welcomed," he added.   Muna Salim, a displaced woman, described the hardship of her journey. "The journey was extremely difficult and dangerous, and it took us a long time to arrive. We spent five days on the road in Saida in pouring rain until Dr Hassan saw us, brought us here and provided us with shelter. God bless him," she said.   The escalation has displaced around 1.2 million people, roughly 20 per cent of Lebanon's population, within four weeks, with evacuation orders covering at least 14 per cent of the country.  Reports indicate over 1,300 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 injured in Lebanon since the escalation began."
