'Our government is simply greedy!' - Hannover residents express frustrations over new fuel price measures amid global energy crisis

"Residents of Hannover expressed their frustrations on Wednesday after the government announced new measures aimed at curbing fuel price increases amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Footage shows cars and trucks stopping to refuel at a filling station with the latest prices seen on display. "Around noon at 12:00, they’ll raise the price really high and then won’t lower it again. Because if they change the price, they’re probably only allowed to reduce it, not increase it [...] the price definitely won’t go down," a resident commented. "Our government is simply greedy. It’s the CO₂ tax, the VAT they squeeze us wherever they can. And now they’ve found another great source of revenue. Other countries have lowered fuel prices to ease the burden on their citizens, but our chancellor isn’t capable of doing that. It really makes me angry," she continued. Another local criticised politicians and lobbyists for doing 'way too well' while ordinary citizens struggle. "There are plenty of people struggling [...] they'll buy less food or less for their children. That's how it ends up: people have to drive to work, they have to use their cars," he added. The restriction measure, inspired by neighbouring Austria, allows petrol stations to raise prices only once a day at noon to address volatility and improve transparency. Introduced as a relief measure, it also aims to limit frequent price changes, previously averaging around 20 per day, with peaks reaching up to 50, according to Germany’s Federal Cartel Office. Fines of up to 100,000 euros (115,619 U.S. dollars) will be imposed as a punishment for a violation of the new 'fuel price brake' in Germany."
