United against terror! - Nigerian President Tinubu and Chad's Deby agree joint security push in Lake Chad Basin

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria hosted Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby in Abuja on Thursday for talks focused on security cooperation and economic coordination in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. Speaking after the meeting, Tinubu stressed the need for coordinated action against armed groups operating in the region. “The two countries are a borderless resolve to combat terrorism and fight them, eliminate all acts of terror to our people and ensure we maintain the sovereignty of our two nations,” he said. “We have agreed on joint responsibility. We have come a long way. What we have inherited from our forebearers is to ensure peace and stability for the development of our region,” Tinubu added. He also pointed to shared geography and diversity as strengths in tackling regional challenges. “A tiny geographical separation. And the language is not a barrier. It is an opportunity. To fight terrorism and develop our people for prosperity.” The two leaders agreed on a cross-border security framework, allowing their forces to conduct joint operations against growing attacks on communities. The visit marks Deby’s first official trip to Nigeria since his inauguration in May 2024. The talks come amid escalating violence in the Lake Chad Basin, where Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram continue to compete for control of territory and resources along the Nigeria–Chad border."
