From commander to chief - Myanmar's military-dominated parliament elects junta General Min Aung Hlaing as president

"Min Aung Hlaing, a military general and Myanmar's coup leader, has won a parliamentary vote to become president. Footage from Naypyitaw filmed on Friday shows military representatives and lawmakers arriving at the Union Parliament. Journalists can be seen recording the session being broadcast live on a television mounted outside the assembly hall, after they were barred from attending the session. Min Aung Hlaing secured 429 votes, formalising his grip on political power in the war-torn nation. U Nyo Saw received 126 votes, and Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye obtained 29 votes. Following the vote, the speaker of the Union Parliament announced that Min Aung Hlaing had been elected president, while U Nyo Saw was appointed vice president. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, 69, believed to be the mastermind behind the 2021 coup against the administration of Aung San Suu Kyi, who served as the state counsellor of Myanmar from 2016 to 2021. Min Aung Hlaing studied law at the University of Yangon before joining the Defence Services Academy in 1974 as part of the 19th intake. He later served in various roles in the Tatmadaw and became the eighth Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services."
