Holy Week carved in sand -  Hundreds of artists sculpt biblical giants in Bolivia's Cochiraya dunes

"More than 300 national and international artists gathered at the 20th National and International Sand Sculpture Meeting in Bolivia's Oruro on Friday to create giant sand figures with biblical scenes as part of the Holy Week celebrations. Footage from the dunes of Cochiraya shows participants crafting large-scale works depicting passages from the Old and New Testaments, including the Passion of Christ and the story of Noah's Ark. Artists spend days in advance crafting the giant sculptures, a painstaking process that demands both skill and deep knowledge of the Christian faith. "The art that is born from the heart and inspires all fellow artists to carry out this work and in that way also contribute to this Christian spirit, this religious spirit," said Jorge Chacon, member of the collective Grupo Art 10, creator and organiser of the event. "This technique is a very peculiar and particular sculpture technique. It is a technique of cohesion of sand particles. The pressure of these allows us to carve the different figures, to shape the sand," remarked Juan Challcochura, an Argentinian artist from Cusco, calling creations 'ephemeral art'. Every Good Friday families come to these dunes to appreciate these creative sculptures, which will be available to the public until Saturday, April 4. The making of sand sculptures in Cochiraya has been carried out for two decades. It has become a tradition that attracts hundreds of visitors and artists each year from neighbouring countries, including Argentina and Peru."
