Industrial hub attack - Smoke billows over Basra after 'drone strike' damages US firm's facilities

"Drone footage captured on Saturday shows the scale of damage at the facilities of the US company, Halliburton, in Basra, following reports of a drone attack. Local media reported that the drone targeted the Al-Borjisia oil complex west of Basra city, specifically the storage facilities used by foreign oil companies. The strikes also reportedly caused a large blaze in the company's warehouses, which contained chemicals used in oil well drilling operations. Basra's civil defense teams later announced that they had put out the fire that broke out inside a food storage warehouse (Jamlon) belonging to an oil company in the Al-Zubair district, with no injuries reported. These events coincided with a statement from the Islamic Resistance factions in Iraq, claiming they had conducted "19 operations over the past 24 hours using dozens of drones and missiles targeting enemy bases in Iraq and the region." Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at 'curbing Iran's nuclear and missile programmes'. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israeli and US assets in the region, accompanied by reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict spilled over into Lebanon as Hezbollah intervened 'in revenge' for the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader. Shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, were disrupted following its closure. The latest escalation has driven oil prices above $100 per barrel, rattling global energy markets and sparking protests in several countries."
