Europe's 'massive energy crisis' - FM says Hungary placing Turkstream under 'military protection' amid Ukrainian 'terrorist attack'

"Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto warned that Europe is facing a deepening energy crisis, citing rising prices and growing threats to key supply routes, as he outlined concerns over the impact of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Speaking in a statement, Szijjarto said the continent is "rapidly heading towards a massive energy crisis," adding that "the war in Iran and the war in Ukraine together could create a serious energy supply crisis in Europe, along with an energy price crisis." He noted that oil and gas prices in Europe have risen sharply, saying they had increased by "60 per cent and 70 per cent respectively." He criticised proposals from the European Commission aimed at curbing consumption as 'absurd', including reducing motorway speed limits or encouraging people to stay at home, arguing instead that "Europe would need new energy sources, more oil and more gas" to ensure stability. Szijjarto also accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt energy supplies to Europe, claiming that Kiev has "been using very aggressive means to cut off Russian oil and gas supplies," and alleging that such actions had been supported by Brussels. Referring to a reported attempted attack on the TurkStream pipeline, he said Serbian authorities had foiled a plot involving explosives, describing it as “a planned terrorist attack," describing it as a "very serious attack against our sovereignty.” In response, Hungary has moved to strengthen the protection of its energy infrastructure. Szijjarto said Prime Minister Viktor Orban had ordered military deployment along the pipeline, noting that "soldiers will protect the gas pipeline and its entry points along its entire length." Earlier, Hungary blocked a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine, with Budapest and Slovakia accusing Ukraine of halting Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline for political reasons. Meanwhile, Kiev claims it was damaged by a 'Russian attack'. Hungary has also repeatedly accused the EU and Ukraine of attempting to interfere in April's elections and bring down the Orban government due to the ongoing rows over energy and accession, while Zelensky himself was accused of threatening Orban's life, saying he would give the PM's 'address' to his armed forces."
