'Easter feels heavy with sorrow' - Prayers and grief in Tyre as Christians mark holiday amid ongoing conflict

"Lebanese Christians marked Easter in solemn observance at the Our Lady of the Sea Maronite Church in Tyre, as Israeli attacks continue across southern Lebanon. Footage shows a child ringing the church bell as worshippers gather for mass, while clergy lead prayers with the congregation. "This year, Easter feels heavy with sorrow. Normally, the whole family gathers together, but this time each of us is in a different place, and we are not together," one worshipper said. "Still, with God's will, the flames of war will soon be put out, peace will prevail, and this joy will once again fill everyone's hearts," she continued. Easter is one of the most significant Christian holidays, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion and burial. Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at curbing 'Iran's nuclear and missile programmes.' Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israeli and US assets in the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict spilt over into Lebanon as Hezbollah intervened 'in revenge' for the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader. Shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, were disrupted following its closure."
