Eggs marks the spot! - Chile's Buin Zoo marks Easter Sunday with treat hunt to promote food search behaviours

"Chile’s Bioparque Buin Zoo, had its animals search for their food hidden in Easter eggs as part of the Easter Sunday celebrations. Located in the commune of Buin, the zoo is the largest in Chile housing more than 2,000 animals of various species. Footage shows animals searching for food inside Easter eggs and packets in their enclosures, while dozens of visitors take photos of them. Director of Bioparque Buin Zoo, Ignacio Idalsoaga, explained the exercise aims to help the animals develop important life skills while also entertaining visitors, particularly children. "It is part of our ongoing work to do what we call environmental enrichment, to create situations where they have to search for food in a slightly more difficult way. To make them perform natural food-search behaviours and today with the theme of the little eggs," he indicated. Idalsoaga added that the zoo’s lions receive ostrich eggs filled with meat, while herbivores mark the resurrection with relevant treats, like fruit. "As a family it is an alternative way to share the occasion, among nature, and for the children to enjoy this experience in a place as pleasant as Buin Zoo," said visitor Francisco Solar. Easter Sunday, or Resurrection Sunday, is one of the most important Christian holidays, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. The tradition is celebrated by millions of faithful around the world with ceremonies and processions."
