KARACHI: The Sindh government has empowered officials of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) to take legal action against individuals involved in littering and disrupting sanitation systems, according to an official notification issued on Sunday. Under the order, assistant directors of the board have been granted authority to act against offences listed under Sections 132, 133 and 136 of the Sindh Local Government Act 2013, enabling them to initiate action against those dumping waste on roads, streets, drains and other public places. Officials said the move aims to strengthen the city’s sanitation system, curb environmental pollution and promote civic responsibility among residents. “With these powers, field officers will be able to take immediate action against violators,” the statement said. Managing Director SSWMB Tariq Ali Nizamani directed that the orders be implemented with immediate effect, urging strict enforcement to improve cleanliness standards. Authorities also appealed to citizens to cooperate and dispose of waste at designated locations, warning that violators would face legal action. A complaint helpline (1128) has been activated for the public to report incidents of illegal dumping. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
