LUCENA CITY — Taal Volcano in Batangas province generated a “very weak phreatic eruption” early Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. Phivolcs said the steam-driven burst, locally called “pusngat,” occurred at 3:08 a.m. and lasted about two minutes, producing plumes that rose around 200 meters above the crater lake. A phreatic eruption is a steam-driven explosion that occurs when water is heated by magma, hot rocks, or volcanic deposits beneath or on the surface, the agency explained.
