Reel defiance - Iranian filmmakers retell Minab school tragedy as missiles thunder overhead

"A film production in Tehran is continuing without interruption despite the ongoing war, with cast and crew pressing ahead with filming even as air defences and military aircraft operate overhead. Footage captured on Saturday shows crew members working inside a filming location while actors rehearse scenes and review their scripts. Director Mohammad Esfandiari said the project focuses on the deadly strike on the Minab girls' school in southern Iran, which left 175 people dead, including 120 children, according to Iranian authorities. "Our story is also about the Minab school and that human tragedy that the enemy, America, created on the first day of war, deliberately with two missiles that were specifically launched to destroy the school, and this tragedy occurred," he said. Iran has branded the attack as a 'barbaric war crime' and blamed the US. Meanwhile, videos circulating online following the strikes appeared to show a US-made Tomahawk missile hitting the area. US President Donald Trump initially suggested the school strike might have been part of a 'false flag' operation before Washington acknowledged that a 'tragic mistake' had been made due to 'outdated intelligence', claiming the building had previously been part of an IRGC naval compound. Esfandiari said prominent Iranian artists and filmmakers had joined the project and continued their work despite the conflict. "My friends, in various artistic fields and the top-level filmmakers of Iran, are involved in this project. Thankfully, you don’t feel that these friends are frightened or that they want it to finish sooner," he added. He said filming occasionally pauses when aircraft or air defence systems are heard nearby. "There's complete calm, even if, for example, air defence is working or enemy fighter jets occasionally pass by. We are doing our work. Sometimes, we just have to add a cut or a shot, for example, there’s a disturbing sound, we pause, a fighter jet passes, and we resume recording." Actor Abbas Khodaverdian said the production continues across several filming locations despite the uncertainty. "We are confident when we're working on this project, our locations are multiple locations that we don't know what's going on behind us, up and down, but we have a feeling that a missile comes and goes, we're doing our work and trying to do what we can do here." It follows joint military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 during diplomatic talks aimed at 'limiting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs'. Tehran responded with strikes targeting Israeli and US military sites across the region, with explosions reported in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict has also spread to Lebanon, where Hezbollah said it intervened 'in vengeance' for the killing of the Iranian leader, while shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have faced disruption."
