Under tight security - Jos residents celebrate Easter amid heavy police presence after deadly Palm Sunday attack on Angwan Rukuba community

"Christians in the Nigerian city of Jos marked Easter on Sunday under tight security, calling for peace and unity after a deadly attack on the Angwan Rukuba community on Palm Sunday. Footage filmed on Sunday at St Michael's Catholic Church showed worshippers praying during Easter Mass, attended by dozens of people. Security vehicles were seen patrolling streets, while banners outside the church paid tribute to community members killed in the recent attacks. "And as for the people that it happens with, we pray for them. We pray for them, and we say, may Almighty God console the families and those that lost their lives in the tragedy," said a resident. The attack took place on the night of Palm Sunday, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a busy street and nearby gathering spots in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos. Early reports put the death toll at between six and 11, but local sources and humanitarian group Open Doors later said at least 27 to 30 people were killed, many of them residents returning from evening church services. In response, Plateau State authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew, which remained in place until April 1, before introducing a nightly curfew to try to prevent further violence. "I lost my niece, [she] is the only child of my late brother," said the victim's relative. He also appealed to government to take action to prevent further attacks. "The government should look at this because it's getting out of hand. This is not the first time this thing has started happening. If you can watch around there, you see so many Christians are no more around here," he added. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Jos, the capital of Plateau State, to console families and talk to local authorities after a deadly attack. Tinubu, who postponed a planned trip to Ogun State, also said cameras would be installed across Plateau State to help security forces identify those behind the violence."
