Lebanon under fire - Smoke billows over southern towns of Qlaileh and Naqoura following Israeli strikes

"Smoke was seen rising over towns in southern Lebanon on Monday, following strikes by the Israeli army and the demolition of a house in Naqoura. According to Lebanese media, Israel carried out two strikes on Qlaileh and the outskirts of Al-Malikiyya and demolished houses located between Naqoura and Al-Bayyada in the country’s southern Tyre district. The reports also stated that Israel shelled the towns of Bayut Al-Sayyad and Al-Mansouri, while a ‘raid’ near Naqoura left three people injured. Meanwhile, Hezbollah announced in a statement on Monday that it had targeted "seven formations of Israeli soldiers in Aynata and Maroun al-Ras, a Merkava tank in Rashaf in southern Lebanon, in addition to four settlements in northern Israel.” Earlier on Monday, the Israeli military said it had destroyed over 300 targets which it described as 'terrorist infrastructure' by air and sea, listing weapons storage facilities, booby-trapped structures and observation posts. It said the ground campaign is aimed at expanding a 'security zone' within southern Lebanon. Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at curbing 'Iran's nuclear and missile programmes'. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict spilt over into Lebanon as Hezbollah intervened 'in revenge' for the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader. Shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, were disrupted following its closure. "
