The Easter Rising marks the 1916 uprising in Dublin against British rule which marked the beginning of the Irish revolutionary period. The uprising came amid growing tension over the treatment of Ireland by London, in particular surrounding the Great Famine and the abolition of the Irish parliament. The uprising, which came as Britain was engaged in the Great War, was quashed by the British army in a matter of days and the ringleaders executed. The violence employed by the British forces following the surrender led to the rise of Sinn Fein and the march toward Irish independence."
