Ireland unfree? - Northern Irish republicans don paramilitary gear for Easter Rising march in Bogside

"Republican marchers in the Bogside area of Derry in Northern Ireland took part in Easter Rising march on Monday, amid warnings of potential clashes. Footage shows participants dressed up in paramilitary‑style clothing taking part in a procession from Creggan to a nearby cemetery. Youths are later seen burning objects in the middle of the street. In Derry, groups such as the National Republican Commemoration Committee hold their own parades, often stirring controversy using paramilitary imagery. Police monitored the marches from drones and helicopters. Previous unapproved events have seen petrol bombs thrown at officers. The authorities confirmed an active investigation is ongoing, noting that participants ignored the rules by wearing paramilitary uniforms, while masked youths using petrol bombs represented 'child criminal exploitation'. The Easter Rising marks the 1916 uprising in Dublin against British rule which marked the beginning of the Irish revolutionary period. The uprising came amid growing tension over the treatment of Ireland by London, in particular surrounding the Great Famine and the abolition of the Irish parliament. The uprising, which came as Britain was engaged in the Great War, was quashed by the British army in a matter of days and the ringleaders executed. The violence employed by the British forces following the surrender led to the rise of Sinn Fein and the march toward Irish independence."
