Night watch - China installs multicoloured laser lights on Jinan highway to fight night fatigue

"Chinese authorities installed new laser lights along a highway near Jinan in eastern China to cut down on drowsiness‑related crashes. Footage filmed on Monday shows beams of coloured laser light stretching along the highway at night as vehicles pass by. "This is my first time seeing this kind of multicoloured laser. It is highly effective for combating driver fatigue at night. Sometimes it is easy to doze off while driving at night, but seeing this laser makes me feel very alert. I think this design is excellent and fantastic," a driver said. "As a driver who frequently drives at night, it is indeed very easy to get drowsy. At first, I found it quite a novelty, but after experiencing it, I realised just how effective it actually is at alleviating fatigue," added a second. Drowsy driving is widely recognised as a major road safety risk, as fatigued motorists can drift out of their lane or fall asleep at the wheel. Measures to tackle the problem range from road design features aimed at keeping drivers alert to in-car systems that detect signs of fatigue and issue warnings. Chinese officials have been testing a range of road safety measures in recent years, with particular focus on long rural expressways. However, there is still limited independent data on how effective laser lighting is at cutting crash rates, while some road safety experts warn that bright visual effects could become a distraction for drivers."
