Cash splash - Cuba rolls out new 2,000 and 5,000 peso notes in Havana to ease payments

"Citizens in Havana began using Cuba's new 2,000 and 5,000 peso banknotes, introduced by the Central Bank to facilitate cash transactions. Footage filmed on Monday shows people visiting bank branches to collect the new notes, which entered circulation on April 1. Many residents described the move as positive, saying the higher denominations should make everyday payments and cash handling easier. "I think it's an improvement. It helps reduce the amount of cash in circulation, which is a positive step. [...] It is good because it allows the country to move forward little by little, to keep developing, and I think that is the right direction," said a resident. He warned that people would need to be cautious with the rollout of the two new banknotes to avoid scams. "What we need right now is a lot of caution, because people are being scammed in the streets. [...] That is why I am telling people to be very careful. Not many people are familiar with it yet, and some still confuse it with banknotes," he explained. The Central Bank said the new notes mark a first in Cuba's numismatic history by featuring female patriots. The 2,000-peso note carries Mariana Grajales Cuello, known as the Mother of the Nation, while the 5,000-peso note features Celia Sanchez Manduley, the Heroine of the Sierra Maestra. "It is very significant because they are two women who created and made history. They made history, and it is very nice that there is not always a man on the banknotes, that at some point they also include a woman," said another resident. She also added that the introduction of these two banknotes facilitates sales. "It would benefit us because handling the money would be easier, since there would be fewer banknotes to count. The same goes for customers when they are paying," she explained. The new Cuban banknotes feature updated security measures designed to prevent counterfeiting and verify authenticity. The banknotes started circulating in Havana and will be rolled out gradually across the country."
