"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the armed attack near the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday. “Early this afternoon in Istanbul's Besiktas, with the successful intervention of our heroic security forces. I want it to be known that we condemn the treacherous attack that was thwarted,” Erdogan said. He added that three attackers were killed, while two police officers were slightly injured. “We will resolutely continue our fight against all forms of terrorism. Regardless of such cowardly and timed provocations, we will not allow any harm to Turkey’s security environment,” he said. Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said the suspects had been identified and had travelled to Istanbul from Izmit in a rental car. “One of them was linked to an organisation that exploits religion, while another, who is his brother, has a criminal record for drug-related offences,” he said. Justice Minister Akin Gurek said the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched an investigation into the incident. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.
