MANILA, Philippines — The defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte on her impeachment case said that it filed a petition at the Supreme Court to "seek clarity" on some constitutional questions on the ongoing hearing at the House of Representatives. In a statement on Wednesday, the team said that it confirmed the filing of a Petition for Certiorari and Prohibition, a copy of which was released to the media by Justice Committee member and Bicol Saro Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon. The team added that the petition was not about avoiding the process being conducted before the Committee, but about ensuring that it complies with the Constitution. "The House has the power to initiate impeachment, but that power is not without limits," it said. The team said that it would refrain from discussing the details publicly "out of respect for the court". A petition was also filed on March 28 by lawyers, led by Isabelito Torreon, seeking a temporary restraining order and writ of preliminary injunction against the inquiry.
