'Wars today are all over oil' - Colombia's Petro calls for peace and total decarbonisation of world

"Colombian President Gustavo Petro reiterated the need for the country to transition from an extractive to a productive economy, highlighting Bogota's potential to export clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The president participated in the National Mining Formalisation Meeting on Tuesday, where he stated that current wars are linked to disputes over oil, defending a path of peace. "The wars we see today are all over oil. They are not worth it and are destroying entire civilisations, and missiles have even fallen in our Caribbean Sea. That is not the way. The way is peace and the total decarbonisation of the world," he said. Petro added that during his administration, "small-scale coal mining must transition to becoming a generator of clean energy," warning companies like Gemsa about the immediate implementation of the ordered measures. He also declared that "Colombia's decarbonisation must be accelerated" to address the effects of climate change, including unprecedented floods in regions such as Sucre, Cordoba, and Uraba. "That explains a bit why we have said that we must move from an extractive economy to a productive one. That does not mean, secondly, that all extraction must be abandoned, because otherwise the industry would be left without inputs in many sectors, and agriculture too," he emphasised. According to the Colombian president, science has concluded that "hydrocarbons, when they end up in the atmosphere through productive processes, kill humanity and extinguish life." In this sense, Petro reaffirmed his commitment to sustainable mining and the production of clean energy, aiming to balance economic development with environmental protection in Colombia."
