Joy in Caracas - Venezuelans celebrate outside Iranian embassy after US-Iran ceasefire announcement

"Dozens of people gathered outside the Iranian embassy in Caracas to show solidarity with Tehran after US President Donald Trump warned that 'a whole civilisation' could be wiped out if a ceasefire is not reached by 20:00 EST on Tuesday.  However, during the rally, news emerged that Trump would suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, provided Tehran immediately and fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz, just hours before his self-imposed deadline for a deal. Footage shows members of Venezuelan social movements holding a vigil and expressing support for Iran. "The Iranian people managed to force their enemies to their knees so that they would accept the conditions set for this ceasefire. There is a halt to crimes against the Palestinian people, the halt to crimes and attacks against the people of Lebanon and also the Yemeni people," Iran's ambassador to Venezuela, Ali Chegeni, said. For her part, Lebanese-Venezuelan journalist Hindu Anderi described the agreement as a 'victory' not only for Iran but for oppressed people around the world. "That is a victory for Palestine, Yemen, Lebanon and also for the people of Venezuela," she said. Ilena Medina, Secretary General of Patria para Todos, highlighted Iran’s determination as a decisive factor in avoiding a larger conflict. "The clarity and determination of the Iranian government is what has, for now, managed to deter the government of Donald Trump from starting a Third World War," she said. Following Trump's announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that Iran's Armed Forces will 'cease defensive operations' if attacks against the state are halted. He added that Iran will allow 'safe passage' through the Strait of Hormuz for a period of two-weeks 'via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces'.  Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Iranian and US delegations are now expected to meet in Islamabad on Friday, April 10, "to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes."  Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at curbing 'Iran's nuclear and missile programmes'.  Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor."
