Missiles rain down on Beirut - Smoke rises over Lebanese capital after Israel launches widespread strikes

"Smoke was seen rising over the Barbour area of Beirut on Wednesday, as strikes hit multiple locations across Lebanon despite a ceasefire taking shape between Iran and the United States and Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had carried out coordinated strikes “within 10 minutes, and simultaneously in several areas,” targeting around 100 headquarters and infrastructure sites belonging to Hezbollah. Lebanese media reported that the strikes hit multiple locations, including areas in and around Sidon, Aramoun, Adloun and several districts of Beirut such as Corniche al-Mazraa and Ain al-Mreisseh. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s forces would 'halt defensive operations' if attacks against Iran stopped. He added that Iran would allow 'safe passage' through the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks “in coordination with the Iranian armed forces.” Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Iranian and American delegations are expected to meet in Islamabad on April 10 to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement. The escalation follows joint military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, during talks aimed at “limiting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.” Tehran responded with strikes on Israeli and US targets across the region. Iran later confirmed the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei. The conflict has since expanded to Lebanon, with Hezbollah entering the war 'in vengeance' for Khamenei’s killing, while shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz have been exposed to disruption."
