"A large fire destroyed approximately 50% of the roof of the Velodrome at the Olympic Park, one of the main venues of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Wednesday. Firefighters can be seen assessing the damage inside the venue and extinguishing the remaining flames from the fire that occurred the previous night. According to official reports, the flames mainly affected the roof, made of highly flammable synthetic materials, which required the mobilisation of more than 60 firefighters to control the blaze. So far, no injuries or casualties have been reported. However, the interior of the velodrome and the recently inaugurated Olympic Museum remained practically intact, with minimal damage in a single room. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. This is not the first incident at the sports venue. In 2017, the roof suffered two minor fires caused by falling balloons, with no serious consequences. The Velodrome was the last facility delivered for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, at a cost of 143 million reais. No test events were held before the Games, and since then it has become a key center for sports and the local community. "
