MANILA, Philippines – Amid the hot, dry season, a tropical depression is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) next week and will be given the domestic name “Caloy,” the state-run weather agency said on Thursday. Weather specialist Chenel Dominguez of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the weather disturbance was estimated at 2,880 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and was moving slowly westward. Reiterating that it is likely to enter PAR next week and move northward, the tropical depression has also been forecast to intensify into a typhoon and possibly further into a super typhoon, Dominguez said in a 5 a.m. briefing. “While a landfall scenario remains unlikely, there is still high uncertainty regarding the direction of the tropical depression in the coming days once it enters PAR,” the Pagasa forecaster said. “Pagasa will closely monitor the movement of this weather disturbance, which is still outside PAR,” she added. In the meantime, the national weather bureau said most parts of the archipelago, particularly Luzon, will experience warm and humid weather throughout the day, with isolated downpours or thunderstorms expected in the late afternoon or evening. It added that the ridge, or extension, of a high-pressure area—the opposite of a low-pressure area—continues to extend over Northern and Central Luzon. Meanwhile, localized thunderstorms may affect Metro Manila and the rest of the country, bringing partly cloudy to overcast skies over the next 24 hours, the weather agency said in its latest advisory.
