'I hope it leads to a permanent solution and actual peace' - Jerusalem residents, visitors react to US-Iran ceasefire

"Residents and visitors in Jerusalem have expressed a mix of cautious optimism and lingering pessimism following the recently announced ceasefire, which was tied to regional tensions involving Iran and its allies. This reflects deep divisions over the prospects for a lasting peace. "As far as I understand, Israel’s bombing Hezbollah, and they’re cooperating with Lebanon," said Brian Griffin, adding that he believes the broader conflict hinges on Iran’s influence in the region. "If they resolve the situation with Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas will lose their sources of funding. And that should lead to peace for everybody." Others drew a distinction between diplomatic efforts with Iran and ongoing tensions along Israel’s northern border. "I think we should continue with Lebanon because it’s not part of the deal," said Shy. "The deal is with Iran, and Hezbollah is something else," he added. Despite the ceasefire, several residents voiced scepticism about whether it would lead to a meaningful or lasting resolution. "It’s very depressing not holding any answer," said Neta, adding, "I feel deeply sorry for the people of Lebanon… and I hope eventually the normal people who seek normal lives, peace, prosperity will somehow prevail. But I’m unfortunately pessimistic about that." Still, some expressed hope that the pause in hostilities could open the door to broader agreements. "I think a ceasefire is excellent, and I hope it leads to a permanent solution and actual peace treaty," Griffin said, adding that such an outcome would benefit not only Israel but also Iran and the United States. A joint US-Israeli operation against Iranian targets started on February 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes on Israel and US military positions in the region, while explosions were reported across Gulf countries. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The ceasefire was announced after US President Donald Trump said he would suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, on condition that Tehran reopens the Strait of Hormuz. Israel has welcomed the ceasefire; however, it added that it does not include Lebanon, where the IDF carried out 'surprise attacks' against Hezbollah."
