Dyson launches first-ever handheld fan to challenge US rival Shark, and there's good news about the price

Dyson has launched its first-ever handheld fan, dubbed HushJet Mini Cool . This multi-functional fan ships in three eye-catching colours, weighs just 212g (that's a fraction more than a bar of Cadbury's Fruit and Nut), and works with accessories so you can wear and take it with you on-the-go. As you'd expect from Dyson, the miniature fan inside the HushJet Mini Cool packs a surprisingly large punch . Despite its diminutive size, the Dyson HushJet Mini Cool can generate air speeds of 25 metres per second, thanks to the motor that whirls at 65,000 revolutions per minute. To put that figure into perspective, the engine on a Boeing aeroplane usually operates below 15,000 revolutions per minute at takeoff power. Dyson offers five different airflow speeds, plus an optional Boost mode for turbocharged power — and faster cooling on the hottest days of the year. These preinstalled settings should be enough to customise cooling to any environment, from gentle airflow during work or travel to fast, refreshing relief in the hottest moments. With such a powerful fan packed inside its portable design, you might be concerned about battery life. However, Dyson claims that you'll be able to keep yourself cool with the HushJet Mini Cool for six hours between charges. Dyson engineers have a long history of obsessing about acoustics for the rest of the HushJet lineup and haircare products like the Dyson Supersonic . To see off this potential pain-point, Dyson has created the HushJet Nozzle, which is designed to lower frequencies, eliminate high-pitched whirring, and silence the sound of whining motors. As a result, Dyson is confident it can achieve powerful and pitch-perfect cooling with its first handheld. HushJet Mini Cool in three finishes: Ink / Cobalt | By blending cobalt blue with ink blue, Dyson says this colourway is designed to "capture the duality of city living, vibrant and bold, yet elegant and composed" Carnelian / Sky | Carnelian is the next evolution of the classic Dyson red finish, bringing it to life "with the matte finish and sky blue for a sense of freshness and cooling." Stone / Blush | Designers at Dyson were inspired by mother of pearl for this colour, which appears like "a soft tinted white infused with a delicate blush of pink" that promises "a sense of calm and warmth" Out of the box, HushJet Mini Cool arrives with a Neck Dock, a Charging Stand, a USB‑C charging cable and a Travel Pouch. Dyson also offers a range of optional add‑ons, including a Universal Mount to fasten to items such as a pram, and a Grip Clip that securely attaches the fan to bag straps or jackets. Dyson HushJet Mini Cool measures 38mm across, which isn't an accident. This is the same diameter of a watch face, and also several recent miniaturisation efforts from the iconic British brand, like the Dyson Supersonic R hair dryer , the all-new, ultra-slim Dyson PencilVac , and now, the HushJet Mini Cool Fan. Speaking about the launch, Chief Engineer Jake Dyson said: "Since 2009, we’ve been obsessed with airflow. Mastering air projection, reducing turbulence, and refining thermal technology. "The HushJet Mini Cool fan is the culmination of that journey: powerful airflow, engineered for life on the move by bringing elite cooling technology from every home to your hand." Dyson started when James Dyson wanted to find a solution that removed the need for a vacuum bag that kept clogging. After 5,127 prototypes, the British firm launched the DC01 in 1993 and made bagless cyclonic suction its calling card. From there, it turned airflow into a business model, moving into bladeless Air Multiplier fans in 2009 and building a reputation for squeezing serious performance out of motors, filters, and compact engineering. That same know-how opened the door to beauty in 2016 with the Supersonic hair dryer, followed by the Airwrap and other styling tools that swap brute heat for controlled air. More recently, Dyson has gone smaller and sleeker again with the PencilVac, launched in 2025 as the world’s slimmest vacuum at 38mm, proving the brand still loves a neat bit of engineering theatre.
