"Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in Pyongyang on Thursday, kicking off a two-day trip, seen as an effort to align positions ahead of a planned summit between the US and China, postponed to mid-May. It is the first visit by the Chinese Foreign Minister to the DPRK in over six years. Footage shows the foreign ministers meeting and shaking hands for the cameras before sitting down for talks, joined by delegations on both sides. Discussions are expected to focus on regional security and bilateral cooperation, as tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain a key issue in US–China relations. Analysts say the trip may be aimed at aligning Beijing and Pyongyang’s agendas before a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where the DPRK is likely to feature prominently. Wang’s visit comes just one day after Pyongyang conducted a series of back-to-back missile tests from the Wonsan area as it pushes to expand nuclear-capable forces. Just two weeks ago, DPRK Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un reiterated his characterisation of South Korea as a "hostile enemy", dashing recent hopes in Seoul of easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula."
