Back on their feet - Church of Holy Sepulchre marks Orthodox Maundy Thursday with traditional cleansing ceremony as holy sites reopen

"The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem marked Orthodox Maundy Thursday ahead of Easter with the traditional foot-washing ceremony, after reopening following Israel's enforced 40-day closure of the holy sites during the Iran war. Previously, it was reported that Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, was prevented from entering the church on Palm Sunday by Israeli police.   Thursday's ceremony was led by Theophilos III, Patriarch of Jerusalem for the Greek Orthodox Church. Footage shows his procession entering the church, as well as scenes from the Maundy Thursday service, during which he washed the feet of several clergymen.   Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is part of the Easter observances, alongside Good Friday and Holy Saturday, leading up to Orthodox Easter Sunday.   Israeli authorities announced the closure of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish holy sites following the outbreak of war involving Israel, the United States and Iran on February 28, citing security concerns.   In a statement, Israeli police announced that holy sites in Jerusalem would reopen to visitors and worshippers starting Thursday morning.
